Why you should use SSL Certificate?

Data security is one of the reasons Google encourage everyone to use HTTPS. HTTPS can protects users’ information from hackers. When users browse your website, they do not want their private information to be stolen or stored.

How To Install an SSL Certificate from GoDaddy?
OS : Ubuntu
Domain registrar: GoDaddy.com
Site : WordPress
Web server : Apache
1. Generating the Certificate Signing Request (CSR)
A certificate signing request (also CSR or certification request) is a message sent from an applicant to a certificate authority in order to apply for a digital identity certificate. See more explanation please go to wiki.
To generate a pair of private key and public Certificate Signing Request (CSR), use opensslcommand:
After you run this line command, you will get two files. They are yourdomain.key and yourdomain.csr. In the process of generating this two files, you will be asked the following information. The most important item is Common Name which must match your domain.
The following two attributes can be left blank.
You will need to copy and paste your CSR when submitting your certificate request to your CA.
After purchasing GoDaddy SSL certificate, here we use standard SSL to set for example.
- Login your GoDaddy account, and click manage SSL certificate.
- Manage the Standard SSL as shown below.
- Copy the entire content from your CSR file(yourdomain.csr) use vim to edit. Click ‘Create Certificate’, and GoDaddy will begin verifying the domain and generating the certificate.
- Then GoDaddy starts to verify your domain. Once validation is complete, you will receive an email from GoDaddy Secure Certificate Services. The email shows your SSL Certificate has been issued.
- Download Certificate files. Download the zip file which contain 2 files: 43e234eme43f5.crt (random name)and gd_bundle_g1_w1.crt. Then we need to rename these two files. Rename the 43e234eme43f5.crt as yourdomain.com.crt, and rename gd_bundle_g1_g2.crt as intermediate.crt.
The file gd_bundle_g1_g2.crt is certificate documentation. That means GoDaddy Certificate Bundles – G2 With Cross to G1, includes Root.
43e234eme43f5.crt is your SSL certificate file.
Well, everything is ready, Let’s install the certificate on the server.
3.Installing the Certificate in Your Server
Recalling the first and second steps, there are three files, yourdomain.key yourdomain.com.crt, and intermediate.crt.
We now configure SSL certificate on Apache server. First create a new directory on the server, such as /home/cert/ . We will copy the three files to this directory above. We need to edit /etc/apache2/sites-available/000-default.conf to update the configuration. Prior to this, back up this file.
Then edit this file using vim:
Now we need to declare a new virtual host using the <VirtualHost> directive. Change <VirtualHost *:80> to<VirtualHost *:443>, HTTPS Service will listen on port 443. Then set ServerName for your domain name.
Then enable the SSL engine on. And add the location of the certificate.
If you wish to redirect users from the non-secure site to the SSL site, you can use an ordinary Redirect directive in VirtualHost:
That’s it, you just need to enable the secure configuration by using the command:
Lastly restart your Apache server.
OK, all the certificate installation is complete, please test your site (https://yourdomain.com and http://yourdomain.com) to ensure everything works well.
